MANILA, Philippines – The threat of an oil spill looms in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, authorities said Tuesday.

More than 110,000 liters of bunker fuel could leak from the MV Yang Nam 8, which was grounded along the coastal waters of Pagudpud, after it was hit by typhoon Juan on Monday.

The Philippine Coast Guard in Northern Luzon said its personnel have already seen an oil sheen near the South Korean cargo vessel, 0.5 nautical miles from the shoreline of Pagudpud.

The ship was loaded with 2,600 metric tons of allegedly smuggled iron sand and was grounded while on its way to Fujian, China from Aparri.
